Päminger, Leonhard (1495-1567)

Leonhard Päminger (Bamminger, etc.), (1495-1567), a German Lutheran poet and hymn writer. His sons Sophonias (d. 1603) and Sigismund (d. 1571) published some of his papers, including the rhymed Dialogus oder Gespräch eines Christen mit einem Wiedertäufer (formerly in the Göttingen University Library; Th. Pol. 188b). The Dialogus discusses the "three principal errors of the Anabaptist"; viz., their rejection of infant baptism, their attitude toward government (with reference to Matthew 5:39), and their recognition of polygamy (on the basis of the Old Testament); the sons in their foreword made it clear that this "fanaticism" was still flourishing at many places.
