Ottmar, Sylvanus (16th century)
Sylvanus Ottmar, a book printer in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, who published contemporaneously with Peter Schöffer in Worms the first German translation of the Old Testament Prophets by Hans Denck and Ludwig Haetzer in several editions. It appeared first on 13 April 1527 at Schöffer's, and on 22 June was followed by a folio issue of 158 pages; he published a second edition on 24 December and by March 1528 the fifth edition by Ottmar was off the press (Meyer: 211). In Nürnberg Andreas Osiander persuaded the council to prohibit its sale (Heberle: 835). Ottmar had already printed several editions of Haetzer's German translation of Malachi with the exegesis by Oecolampadius in Latin on 17 July 1526, the first edition in octavo and quarto, in 1527 in folio (Heberle: 832).
