Eder, Marx (d. 1605)
Marx (Markus) Eder (Oeder), an Anabaptist martyr concerning whose life only the story of his martyrdom is known, as it is succinctly given in the chronicles of the Hutterites. He was a wagoner by trade. He was seized at Mörenbach in Bavaria, Germany, on 24 April 1605, together with Hans Polzinger, a tailor, probably on their way to Moravia. On the following morning they were put into prison at Ried, where they remained 15 weeks, while Jesuits from Oettingen vainly tried to convert them. Twice they were asked while on the rack who had sheltered them and where they were going, but they revealed nothing. Then the authorities in Burghausen issued an order to behead and then to burn them. This was done at Ried on 5 August 1605. Eder requested the executioner first to behead his companion, and when this was done, said to all the people, "God be praised. My brother has stood the test!" The government was apparently hopeful to the last moment that one or both would be converted, for the executioner had been instructed not to take the life of either if he recanted. Their martyrdom is sung in the hymn beginning, "Hört, hört, und merkt ihr Gottes Kind, die ihr Liebhaber Gottes sind."
