Abraham Nickel, a Mennonite minister of Jamerau in (former) West Prussia, Germany, was born 4 June 1743, and died 23 February 1820. He was a preacher in the Waterlander (Frisian) congregation at Schönsee in the Culm Lowlands (Niederung) from 1766, and elder from 1779. He is known for his audience with the Prussian king, Fredrick William III, and his consort in Graudenz in 1806, when he represented the Mennonites in presenting a contribution of 30,000 Talers, while his wife presented to the queen a basket of fresh butter. The queen, deeply moved by the loyal and simple manner of the donors, gave the woman the shawl she was wearing with the words, "In memory of this moment." In commemoration of this incident a monument of black granite in the form of a rounded obelisk was erected in the churchyard of the Schönsee Mennonite Church, with an account of the incident inscribed on it.
