Neelken (Nelleken) Jaspers, an Anabaptist martyr, erroneously considered Reformed, a girl 17 or 18 years of age, was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, on 27 June 1570 (not 1571, as in Martyrs Mirror), after giving a valiant testimony to her faith. The death sentence states that she was rebaptized and was "persistent in her heresy." Her father Jasper Hermansz and her mother Maeyken Janssens had both been executed as martyrs at Antwerp in 1569, Jasper on 22 June and Maeyken on 22 November. While in prison Neelken wrote a letter, dated 12 December 1569, which reveals her firm faith and joy in suffering. She said that she wanted to follow the example of her parents and two youths who had been executed, though they had not yet been baptized. She is commemorated in a hymn composed by an anonymous 16th century author, entitled, "Aen Neelken Jaspers."
