Nebraska Aid Committee
Nebraska Aid Committee was organized in the General Conference Mennonite Church of Beatrice, Nebraska in 1884, to bring at least 20 Mennonite families from Khiva, Russia, to the United States. The appeal printed in the Herald of Truth, 15 April 1884, suggested that $400 per family would be required to bring them to Kansas or Nebraska. The committee consisted of L. E. Zimmerman, John Penner, J. G. Wiebe, Peter Janzen, and John von Steen. A later announcement by Zimmerman, who was a deacon of the Beatrice church and treasurer of the committee, reported that $3,000 had been received and that additional gifts by Herald readers could be sent to John F. Funk, who had agreed to forward gifts to the committee. News items in 1884 indicated that some of these families arrived in America that year. The same appeals were made in the Bundesbote, and several reports of the migration appeared there, e.g., 15 June 1884, and 12 September 1884.
