Mandl (Mendel), the name of several Hutterian Brethren of different origin and descent. The first of this name is Jakob Mandl, formerly an administrator of the Lord of Liechtenstein at Nikolsburg, Moravia, who had joined the earliest Anabaptist group, there led by Jakob Wideman, and was appointed Diener der Notdurft at Austerlitz in 1529. Perhaps the best-known brother of this widespread name is Hans Mandl or Klein Hänsel, of Guffidaun, Tyrol, whose courageous stand at his trial and martyrdom at Innsbruck in 1561 won him abiding high regard among the Brethren. Another Mandl, apparently of no relationship to the former, is reported by the Hutterite Chronicle for 1582. He was Jakob Mandle, who, while accompanying a Hutterite missioner to Switzerland, was apprehended by the authorities and shortly thereafter drowned in the Limmat River near Baden, Aargau, Switzerland. A schoolmaster Wilhelm Mandl was active around Nikolsburg before 1621, but no further details are given. The Klein Geschichts-Buch reports also a brother Paul Mändelig of Czech origin, who had joined the brotherhood in Slovakia late in the 18th century and in 1783 migrated together with 56 other brothers and sisters to Vyshenka in the Ukraine to be reunited with the remnants of the brotherhood. His name quite probably was later changed into Mandl or Mendel, and it is he who became the ancestor of all Mendels of today who live on Hutterite Bruderhofs in North America, or became members of the General Conference Mennonite Church or Krimmer Mennonite Brethren groups.
