Born 29 February 1928 in Govindapuram, a small village in [[Andhra Pradesh (India)|Andhra Pradesh State, India]], Murthy was a Brahmin by birth. He began his career as a [[Telugu Mission (Mennonite Brethren)|Telugu]] language teacher in the [[Mennonite Brethren Church|Mennonite Brethren]] mission schools (20 years). As he used the Gospel of John as a text in teaching the Telugu language to missionaries, he accepted its message and was baptized by [[Krahn, Henry (1923-1985)|Henry G. Krahn]] on 16 September 1957.
