Mennonites of America, The (Monograph)
The Mennonites of America by C. Henry Smith, the first and by the 1950s the only comprehensive work on American Mennonite history, was published by the author at Goshen, IN, in 1909, printed by the Mennonite Publishing Houseat Scottdale, PA, 484 pp. illustrated. It was Smith's Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Chicago, and chapters I-IV were published in the same year as a booklet of 147 pages to fulfill the doctoral requirements. Its content was ultimately absorbed in revised form into the author's <em>Story of the Mennonites</em> (Berne, 1941). Smith also wrote a booklet of 71 pages, Mennonites in America (Akron, 1942), as one of the Civilian Public Service Core Course booklets called Mennonites and Their Heritage, published by the Mennonite Central Committee.
