Mennonite Youth Service (MC) was an 8-page quarterly published by the Lancaster Mennonite Conference. In order to increase Christian testimony and to provide suitable activities for Christian development, especially among the young people, the Lancaster Mennonite Conference encouraged the organizing and conducting of Christian worker groups in the local congregations. As early as 1939 groups were organizing for Christian service, such as distributing tracts and other Gospel literature, making scrapbooks, advertising the Gospel in trolley cars and buses, and visiting shut-ins. At the fall session of Conference in 1946 a resolution was passed to prepare a folder to give suggestions and guidance concerning objectives, opportunities, methods of organization, and safeguards in the organizing and conducting of the Christian worker groups. This folder was distributed among the congregations in the conference area. The years which followed saw a rapid increase in the organizing of these worker groups. At the spring session of Conference in 1950 a committee was selected to give guidance to the Christian worker groups within the conference. About a year later this committee, known as the Youth Christian Service Activities Committee, planned for the publication of a monthly paper for the promotion and guidance of Christian service activities by the worker groups.

The first issue of Mennonite Youth Service was published in July 1951 with a circulation of approximately 3,000 copies. It was printed monthly thereafter, with one exception, until October 1954, when it became an 8-page paper and was printed quarterly. It contained reports of the various activities of the worker groups, testimonies by young people of blessings received, also articles giving encouragement and helpful suggestions. News notes and poems also added interest to its pages. It was intended that this little paper should aid in enlisting the interest and support of the several thousand young people of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference and surrounding areas to the great task of witnessing to the saving power of Christ through Christian service.
