Mennonite Aid Union of Kansas

Mennonite Aid Union of Kansas, an unincorporated mutual assessment association, was organized in 1906. Most of the founders were former members of the Mennonite Aid Plan of Freeman, SD, who felt it would be more economical to organize a society for local Mennonites than to have one whose members were widely scattered. As of 1955 the society had a membership of 2,107 covering 2,464 risks for a total evaluation of $16,435,887.50. Up to 1956, the society did not insure business properties in towns and cities. Only Mennonites in good standing were admitted. This excluded members who belong to secret societies or who have been expelled from church on account of unchristian living. The headquarters as of 1956 were at North Newton, KS.
