Mattheus de Vik (Mattheeuws de Vick, de Vicht, de Vecht), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr,was arrested with [[Christiaen Janssens (d. 1567)|Christiaen Langedul]], [[Cornelis Claesz (d. 1567)|Cornelis Claesz]], and [[Hans Symonsz (d. 1567)|Hans Symonsz]] on Sunday morning, 10 August 1567, at Antwerp, Belgium, while attending a meeting. After imprisonment and torture they were sentenced to death at [[Antwerp (Belgium)|Antwerp]] on 13 September 1567. At the place of execution they addressed the bystanders and Mattheus said: "Citizens, that we suffer here, is for the truth, and because we live according to. the Word of God." Thereupon his words were drowned out by the roll of soldiers' drums, and the victims bound together two by two, after having been strangled by the executioner, were burned in their little huts of straw, thus giving a striking testimony of their faith.
