Mattheus Wens was a Mennonite of Antwerp, Belgium, a mason by trade and a deacon of the congregation. His wife [[Maeyken Wens (d. 1573)|Maeyken Wens]] was apprehended and put to death at [[Antwerp (Belgium)|Antwerp]] on 6 October 1573. While she was in prison Mattheus wrote her a letter, and Maeyken wrote her reply on the back of the same sheet and returned the letter.
