Martijntgen (van) Aelmeers, an Anabaptist martyr, known under different names: Martijne Amare, Martijntgen (van) Aelmeers, Martincke Aelmaers. She was a young unmarried woman, who was executed with six others at Hondschoote in Flanders, Belgium. Particulars of the execution are lacking, but it probably occurred on 20 April 1563. This martyr is listed twice by van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror: (a) D 297, E 655, where she is called Martijntgen Aelmeers; and (b) D 298, E 655, where her name is Martijne (Martijntgen) Amare. Bibliographie II, No. 16, wrongly identifies her with Marijn Amare (Marijn Euwouts), but this martyr died at Bruges in 1561. Martijntgen Aelmeers was the sister of the martyr Nicasen van Aelmeers. Until recently no particulars were known, the date of the execution usually being assumed to have been 20 April 1563. The records published in the Jaarboek show that her name was Martijnken Alcmaers, and that she was a daughter of Loys Alcmaers. She was a native of Steenwercke in Flanders, and the execution took place on 23 March 1562.
