Mariken van Meenen (Maeyken Eghels), an Anabaptist martyr, drowned at the Steen castle at Antwerp, Belgium, on 5 September 1562 with several other martyrs. Mariken, who was a native of Haerlebeke near Kortrijk, Flanders, is commemorated in the hymn "Lieve broeders, ick groet u met sanghen" (Dear brethren, I greet you with songs), found in theNieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and of 1583 and reproduced by . The account found in van Braght'sMartyrs' Mirror on Mariken and her fellow martyrs is rather insignificant, and erroneously gives as the date of execution of a number of martyrs 15 August 1561.
