Maria of Montjoie (d. 1552)

Maria of Montjoie (Monschau, in the Eifel, Germany, near the Belgian border), an Anabaptist martyr, who was drowned in 1552 after an imprisonment lasting nearly two years. She valiantly resisted all pleas and threats to give up her faith. On the way to the place of execution she sang cheerfully. She said, "I have been the bride of a man, but today I hope to be the bride of Christ, and to inherit His kingdom with Him." At the water's edge they held her two hours, hoping to persuade her to forsake the truth. She said, "I adhere to my God; proceed with what you have come here for." She died courageously with the words, "O heavenly Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit." Her death is described in a song, "Ach fröhlich will ich singen," found in the Schön Gesangbüchlein, Trier copy, No. 96; Ausbund, No. 25; Wackernagel, Kirchenlied V, 1082 f.
