The Maranatha Evangelical Church in London, Ontario began meeting in homes in 2008, and later began meeting in the Youth for Christ building on Adelaide Street. In 2012 the group included about 12 persons, including 4-5 children. Members of the group were very aware of the Meserete Kristos Church in Ethiopia when living there, and desired to affiliate with Mennonites in Canada.

In keeping with its Ethiopian roots, the congregation's worship style has included more emotional expression than found in most Anglo Mennonite congregations. On 28 April 2012 the Maranatha Evangelical Church became an emerging congregation in Mennonite Church Eastern Canada. The pastor in 2012 was Eshetu Asfaw.
