Leon Salem Mennonite Church (Leon, Iowa, USA)
The Leon Salem Mennonite Church in Leon, Iowa, USA was established in 1959. The congregation started when two Beachy Amish families moved to Leon from the Kalona area. The move was the result of a deliberate search by the Kalona-area Beachy Amish for cheaper land in an area where farms were readily available. Moses Yoder, one of the first settlers, was also a minister. Later families that joined the Leon community came from Oklahoma, Kansas, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Oregon.
The perception existed among the Kalona Beachy Amish that the Leon group was the more progressive. By moving to a new area where they were involved in shaping the rules of conduct the Leon settlers could accommodate their more liberal feelings. This avoided a confrontation in their home congregation.
In 2017 the church was a member of the Beachy Amish Mennonite Fellowship and had a membership of 110. The bishop was Monroe Gingerich, and the ministers were Marvin Kauffman and Henry Miller.
