Willem Leendertz studied theology at the universities of Amsterdam and Groningen, completing doctoral work in 1913. After serving as Mennonite pastor in Nes (Ameland), he became assistant librarian at the Dutch School for Economics in Rotterdam in 1922 and full librarian in 1924. In 1933 he became lecturer and in 1944 professor of theology and ethics at the Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary. In 1946 he was appointed professor of the philosophy of religion at the U. of Amsterdam, a position he held until his retirement in 1954. His field of specialization was philosophical ethics. He was particularly knowledgeable about Søren Kierkegaard.
