Laurents Andriesz (d. 1570)
Laurents (Lauwerens) Andriesz (Andriessen), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, on 12 or 13 September 1570, with Joost Verkindert. Van Braght in the Martyrs' Mirror gives a letter Laurents wrote on 9 September 1570 to Joost's wife, which contains an admirable testimonial to their faith: "It is still the purpose of us both to adhere to the eternal truth by the great help of the Lord, without whom we can do nothing, and to whom we must also constantly look for help and comfort." The Biblical references from the New Testament are excellently assembled and arranged. The letter closes with these words: "Hence, my dear Sister, be content and do not grieve immoderately.... We must part here once. Thus, hasten, that we may all meet together when men shall not be able to part us any more. May the good and almighty Lord full of grace and truth make us fit thereto." Laurents was unmarried.
