Kroeker, a Prussian Mennonite name, was first recorded in Tiegenhagen in 1627. The name occurred in the following congregations and communities: Danzig, Ladekopp, Rosenort, Fürstenwerder, Heubuden, Elbing, and Königsberg, and from here spread to Poland, Russia, and North and South America. In 1940 there were only about 40 Mennonites bearing this name in its various forms in East Germany. Well-known representatives of this name were Isaac Kroeker, elder (1767-1787) of the Königsberg Mennonite congregation, Jakob Kroeker, elder of the Elbing Mennonite Church (1808-1846), Jakob Kroeker of Russia and Germany, Abraham J. Kroeker of Russia and Mountain Lake, Minnesota, and M. A. Kroeker, longtime Mennonite Brethren minister at the Silver Lake Mennonite Brethren Church and later Executive Secretary of the denomination's Board of General Welfare and Publish Relations.
