Daniel Krehbiel, the son of Jakob and Elizabeth Kapp Krehbiel, was born at Weierhof, Germany, 22 April 1812. He received the usual education of that day and took up the saddler trade. In 1832, because of his convictions that a Christian should have no part in military service as required in Germany, he came to North America.

At first he located in western New York where he had relatives and worked at his trade. He started in business for himself near Buffalo in 1836. He was married to Mary Leisy of Cleveland, Ohio on 18 July 1841, and five years later they moved to that city. Although Krehbiel's business prospered he missed the blessings of a Mennonite church, and after an unsuccessful attempt to gather the scattered Mennonites of the city together into a church, he moved to West Point, Iowa, in 1856, where some of his brothers from Germany had recently settled.

Daniel united with the Mennonite church at West Point. Nine miles away was the Zion Mennonite Church, where his brother Jacob was pastor. Observing that these congregations had little in common, he was concerned that isolated and scattered Mennonites be brought together. At his suggestion the two congregations met in 1859; he expressed his ideas on union to do mission work and so a call was issued for a general conference in 1860.

In 1862 he returned to Cleveland, but he continued to be active in the new organization which he had founded. The Conference placed him on the building committee and in 1872 elected him as treasurer of the mission board, which office he held until 1881. He died at his home in Cleveland on 4 January 1888.
