Johann Koop: immigrant farmer; born on 31 May 1863 in Marienthal, Molotschna Colony, Russia to Jacob B. and Katharina (Barkman) Koop, sixth child of ten; Sarah (Baerg) Koop: wife and mother; born on 30 June 1864 in Schwesterthal, Crimea, Russia to Peter and Susanna (Neuman) Baerg, youngest of six children. Johann and Sarah immigrated to Canada with their parents as a part of the Mennonite Kleine gemeinde group. Johann and Sarah married on 4 January 1883 in Neuanlage, a village just a mile southwest of Blumenort, West Reserve, Manitoba.
They enjoyed gardening, and their property was known for its tall trees and abundant flowers. In 1918, Johann and Sarah sold their farm to their son and daughter-in-law and purchased land in the Prairie Rose district (Manitoba). On the farm, the couple raised chickens for their eggs, turkeys for sale in Winnipeg, and pigs for meat, in addition to growing grain and caring for an extensive garden.
Johann B. Koop was badly injured in a car accident in 1934 that occurred while returning from visiting relatives in Saskatchewan – an accident in which his brother-in-law Abraham L. Plett died. Johann Koop died on 12 October 1935; his wife Sarah died on 8 May 1941 in Manitoba. The couple had 15 children, eight of whom died young.
