Klopper was a Mennonite family at Amsterdam. Members of this family were found in the Zonist congregation, and some also in the Lamist congregation. Two members of this family served as pastors of Mennonite churches. Reinier Klopper from Amsterdam, who studied at the Amsterdam Zonist Mennonite Seminary from 1736-1741, was preacher at den Ilp 1742-1745 and Almelo 1745-1754. He was called to Almelo in May 1745, but could not preach his first sermon before 20 November 1746, because the Baron of Almelo refused to approve the appointment. Nicolaas Klopper (d. ca. 1812 at Amsterdam) attended the Zonist seminary at Amsterdam for a time, but was dismissed because he did not accept the strict Zonist doctrines. He then served as preacher of the Goes congregation until 1752. From 1754-1758 he studied at the Lamist seminary, and then served the congregations of Bolsward (until 1764) and Harlingen 1764-1786. He was an ardent Patriot against the oligarchy of the old Reformed governing families. His radicalism caused so much discord with his congregation that he was forced to resign. After his resignation he lived at Amsterdam.
