Hermann von Kerssenbroick attended the cathedral school in Münster in 1533, and remained there until the Anabaptist kingdom was set up there; and after the city had been taken he returned to the same school. He lived a while in Cologne and Hamm; for 25 years (1550-1575) he was rector of the cathedral school at Münster, and died 5 July 1585 as rector of the cathedral school at Paderborn. His two books, Belli Monasteriensis contra anabaptistica monstra gesti descriptio, auctor Hermanno a Kerssenbroick (Cologne, 1545), and Anabaptistici furoris Monasterium inclitam Westphaliae metropolim evertentis historica narratio, autore Hermanno a Kerssenbroick, are source materials for Anabaptist history in Münster.

The former is a lengthy poem in hexameters, of no value in content, which he himself rejected as immature in his later years; the latter of greater importance, though not faultless critically, since it was written from the Catholic point of view and is prejudiced. In 1573 it was given for publication to the Cologne printery of Gervinus Calenius, but the Münster city council prohibited its publication. The council could, however, not carry out its intention to suppress it, for manuscript copies were already in the hands of several persons. In 1730 and 1750 an inadequate edition was printed. A German translation published in 1771 (2nd edition 1881) is full of errors (Löffler). In 1900 H. Detmer published a thorough edition of the work in two volumes at Münster (Cornelius, p. xxiv and p. xxix). In 1929 the Aschendorf publishers at Münster printed another edition in German translation based on a different manuscript copy, with an introduction by S. P. Widmann.
