Christmas Carol Kauffman, a writer of inspirational fiction, was born 25 December 1901 in Elkhart, Indiana, the second of four daughters of Abraham R. and Selena Bell (Wade) Miller. She graduated from Elkhart High School and attended Goshen College and Hesston College. She began writing at Hesston and for years she wrote a short story a month for a weekly youth magazine published by Herald Press, completing more than 100 stories. In 1924 she married Norman Hostetler, who was accidentally electrocuted in 1926. In 1929 she married Nelson E. Kauffman, a Mennonite pastor. She was the mother of four children.

She worked with her husband as a missionary in Hannibal, Missourifor 22 years. In Hannibal she began writing her popular novels, which were published by Herald Press and include Lucy Winchester, 1945; Life within Life, 1952; Not Regina, 1954; Hidden Rainbow, 1957; For One Moment, 1960; Light from Heaven, 1961; and Search to Belong 1963.
