Lambert Hermansz ten Kate, b. 23 January 1674 at Amsterdam, d. there 14 December 1731, was the son of Herman ten Kate and Sara Blaupot. He was baptized in the Lamist church on 18 April 1706. Like his father he was a grain dealer in Amsterdam. He was one of the educated and generally gifted men, of whom the Amsterdam Mennonite Church had a great many at the time. He was a linguist, a forerunner of Jakob Grimm, who understood the value of his work (Kalff, 436). In his main work, Aenleiding tot de kennisse van het verheven deel der Nederduytse sprake (Amsterdam, 1723), his basis was not the written language and grammar, but the living speech; he gives a number of conversations in various dialects, which he sees in a remote connection, and for which he drew up a table of sounds. This work proves him to have been a man with a sense of reality, and makes him the originator of the science of comparative languages in the Low Countries.

He also published two devotional books: Drie gewichtige Bedenkingen des Gemaeds; benevens den Weg tot Heil (Amsterdam, 1728) and Het Leven van onzen Heiland Jezus Christus (Amsterdam, 1732).
