Joris van Meersch (d. 1570)

Joris van (der) Meersch (in van Braght's<em> Martyrs' Mirror </em>van Meesch) was an Anabaptist martyr, executed at Ghent, Belgium on 22 November 1570 (method of execution unknown), with Jacob (Jacop) Lowijs. The Martyr's Mirror states that they were executed "about 1570." Particulars are lacking. The Dutch martyr book Historie der Warachtige getuygen Jesu Christi (Hoorn, 1617) contains two accounts on these martyrs, both incomplete; the second account was used by van Braght. Joris and Jacob are celebrated in a hymn, "Broeders en susters al ghemeyn, fondeert alleen op Christum den Steijn" (Brethren and sisters all together, build only on Christ, the Stone, as foundation), found in the Tweede Liedeboeck of 1583.
