Jarich Jelles, a native of Friesland, apparently from Harlingen, was a member of the Amsterdam Lamist Mennonite congregation. He was unmarried and the well-to-do owner of a grocery store in Amsterdam. About 1650 he retired from business to devote himself to "acknowledging the truth which is after godliness" (Titus 1:1). He was a deacon in the Lamist church from 1653. He died in 1683. After his death his Belydenisse des Algemeenen en Christelyken Geloofs was published at Amsterdam in 1684. In the appendix to this confession is found a short biographical sketch of Jelles, probably by the editor and printer of the book, Jan Rieuwertsz. This confession is deeply influenced by the principles of Spinoza and Descartes, of whom Jelles was a devoted adherent.
