Janzen, Sara Siemens (1809-1885)
Sara Siemens Janzen, Mennonite pioneer, was born on 27 January 1809 in the village of Rosenort, Molotschna Colony, South Russia. She was the ninth of ten children born to Klaas J. Siemans (ca.1758-1834) and Katharina Friesen (born 1763). Sara was baptized into the membership of the Kleine Gemeinde. On 20 November 1832 she married Cornelius Janzen (1812-1864). Together they had nine children, six of which survived to adulthood. Sara and her husband purchased a Wirtschaft (farmstead) in Neukirch, Molotschana where they lived until Cornelius died in 1864. Sara then lived with her children in Steinbach, Borosenko until 1874 when she immigrated with three of her daughters to Jansen, Nebraska in the United States. Sara died on 13 January 1885 in Blumenhof, Manitoba, Canada while visiting her son Johann S. Janzen (1840-1905).
Two letters remain of Sara’s correspondence with her son and his family in Manitoba while she was living in Nebraska. They give the reader a glimpse into the faith and life of a Mennonite women’s pioneer experience.
