Jannijn Buefkijn (Hans Keeskooper), an Anabaptist martyr, born in Werwik, unmarried, baptized in 1547 by a certain Christiaen, burned at the stake on 9 July 1551 (van Braght erroneously gives the date as 1550), in Ghent, Belgium. His death is sung in the hymn, "O Heer u wil ick loven" (O Lord, I will praise Thee), in Het Offer des Heeren and in the Ausbund in German, "O Herr dich will ich loben." It has 13 stanzas of eight lines. It is based on a letter written by the martyr in prison, stating the confession he made before his judges, especially on baptism and communion. He also describes how a young man who had not yet been baptized because he was not well enough established in the Christian life, joyfully witnessed to his faith and suffered death, for it. Hans van Overdamme was also executed at the same time as Jannijn. They had arranged between them that Jannijn, when he reached the site of execution, would remove his stockings, in order to give Hans more time to address die crowd.
