Janneken Mels (Janneken Melchior Simonsse or Simonsdochter), from Brielle, Dutch province of South Holland, and baptized there in 1536 by Cornelis Pieters (Cornelis wt den Briel), an Anabaptist martyr, was beheaded on 4 September at Zierikzee, Dutch province of Zeeland. Janneken and three other Anabaptists were apprehended early in the morning of 20 July 1536; after imprisonment, trial, and torture all four died loyally. During the trial one of the burgomasters had snarled to them: "We care not for your Word of God, but hold to the mandate of the Emperor, and shall ignominiously exterminate all those who act contrary to it."
