Jan de Timmerman (1543?-1569)

This Anabaptist martyr, not found in van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror, is likely identical with Jan Wiljoot, named by van Braght but not found in official records. Jan de Timmerman was burned at the stake on 2 April 1569 at Antwerp. He was born at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders and was 26 years of age. He lived at Borgerhout, a suburb of Antwerp, and was a weaver. His two little children had not been baptized, because, as he confessed, "in the Scriptures nothing is found of children's baptism and (he) is of opinion that one should not baptize children." Jan had been baptized seven years before, at the age of about 19, by Elder Hans Busschaert in a hamlet near Armentieres in Flanders. He had been apprehended at a meeting of the Antwerp congregation held in the house of Jan Poote.
