Jan (van) Parijs, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 30 March 1568, on the Veerle square at Ghent, Belgium, together with Pieter Aelbrechts (Pierken van Cleve), Hendrik Maelschap, and Laurens Pietersz, while at the same time seven non-Mennonite iconoclasts, who had destroyed the icons of saints in the Catholic churches, were hanged at the Veerle square. Jan van Parijs was born at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, in 1565 or 1566[!?]; he had received baptism on his faith; by profession he was a weaver. His name is found in the song "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert jaer, ende twee en tsestich mede" of the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren.
