Irapuato (Guanajuato, Mexico)

Irapuato is a city in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, about 350 km. (220 miles) northwest of Mexico City, where under the leadership of H. P. Krehbiel of Newton, Kansas, some of the Mennonite refugee families settled who had come to Mexico and had settled first in Rosario. In Irapuato the refugee settlers at­tempted to earn a living by means of irrigation farming. After two years of discouraging experienc­es most of the families left. Some went to El Trebol in the state of Durango to try for the third time to found a successful settlement; others moved to Cuauhtémoc, and still others decided to emigrate to Canada. This was possible because after two years in Mexico they could secure citizenship and overcome illnesses which had earlier prevented them from entering Canada.
