Hydro, Oklahoma, a town with a population of 750 in 1955 (pop, 1,060 in 2000), is located 65 miles (105 km) west of Oklahoma City near Interstate 40. It is noted mainly for its agricultural products—wheat, cotton, peanuts, and livestock. A small rock mining industry is in operation in a slightly mountainous area south of Hydro. Some General Conference Mennonites settled south of Hydro in 1904 and Mennonites (MC) established themselves on the level wheatlands north of town soon after.
