Hoyte Riencx (d. after 1600)

Hoyte (Hoite, Huyte) Riencx (Renix, Renicx, Rienicks, Reincx), also called Hoyte Renix Santvoort, was a Dutch Mennonite elder, a cobbler. His years of birth and death are unknown; he died after 1600. Hoyte Riencx was ordained as an elder in 1555 by Leenaert Bouwens, who had baptized him and of whom Hoyte remained a loyal follower. He lived at Bolsward, a Dutch town in Friesland. K. Vos surmised that Riencx was present at the Mennonite conference of elders held at Wismar in 1554 or 1555, and may also have been present at a meeting of elders in Harlingen in 1557, where Menno Simons and Leenaert Bouwens disagreed on banning and shunning. K. Vos also supposed that a letter by Menno Simons (printed in Opera Omnia, 1681: 392) was addressed to Hoyte Riencx. In 1566-1567, during the Frisian-Flemish troubles, he took the side of the Frisians, as did Leenaert Bouwens. In 1590, when the group of the moderate Young Frisians was founded by Pieter Willems Bogaert, Lubbert Gerritsz, and Jan Hendriks of Schiedam, Hoyte also joined this group. He was attacked by the Reformed ministers of Stavoren and Grouw, and in 1600 by Johannes Bogerman and Gosuinus Geldorp, Reformed ministers of Sneek.

Doreslaer-Austrosylvius mentions (pp. 151, 154) a writing by "H.R." of 1563, which had been approved by the Mennonite leaders of "Vrieslant, Hollant, Brabant, Groeningerlant ende Emderlandt." These initials apparently mean Hoyte Riencx.

Hoyte Riencx, though he played an important part in the Frisian-Flemish schism, seems not to have been a highly gifted man; his antagonists have described him as a haughty, narrow-minded man.
