Amsterdam: Doopsgezinde Prenten]'']]    Joannes Houbakker was a Dutch Mennonite preacher, born 18 April 1685 at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], died there 14 December 1715, who in spite of an early death occupies a place of honor in the Mennonite church community of [[Netherlands|Holland]]. At the age of 20, having attended the lectures of [[Galenus Abrahamsz de Haan (1622-1706)|Galenus Abrahamsz]], 1699-1705, he was provisionally appointed preacher of the United Flemish and Waterland congregation in Amsterdam (Lam and Toren congregation); he received the position permanently in 1711 after he had declined an offer from the Rotterdam church. He was known as an excellent pulpit speaker. After his death three volumes of his sermons, <em>Predikatien over verscheide texten der H. Schriftuur</em>, were published in 1730, 1732, and 1735. His picture in a steel engraving is found in <em>Verzaameling van de Afbeeldingen van veele voornaame Mannen en Leeraaren</em> (Amsterdam, 1743).
