In 1870-1893 he was editor of the <em>Doopsgezinde Bijdragen. </em>In 1852-1894 he was a member of the board of the [[Algemene Doopsgezinde Societeit|Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit]] (A.D.S). He was a member of a number of learned associations, such as the Society of Dutch Literature and the Royal Dutch Academy of Science. His learning was recognized by the University of Leiden, which honored him with the degree of <em>Doctor Theologiae honoris causa </em>in 1870.<br />

His grandson J. G. de Hoop Scheffer (born 1884), a lawyer and bank manager at Amsterdam, was a member of the A.D.S. 1929-1955; in 1929-1951 he was its treasurer, and 1946-1951 a member of the board of the Mennonite Seminary.<br />
