Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten: Dutch painter, poet, and art theoretician; born 2 August 1627 at Dordrecht, Netherlands, the son of Dirk van Hoogstraten and Mayken de Koning. Samuel married Sara Balen (d. 19 October 1678, Dordrecht, Netherlands), daughter of Cornelis Matthijsz Balen and Elisabeth Fransen van Dorsten. Samuel died in Dordrecht on 19 October 1678.

Samuel trained first with his father Dirk van Hoogstraten and stayed in Dordrecht until about 1640. On the death of his father, he moved to Amsterdam where he entered the workshop of Rembrandt. A short time later, he started out on his own as a master and painter of portraits. Eventually he became a painter of architecture and developed a skill for perspective. Samuel made several trips throughout his career. On a long voyage in 1651-1654 Samuel visited Rome and also Vienna. In 1662-1666 he was often in London. Eventually he retired to Dordrecht, where he married in 1656, and held an appointment as provost of the mint.

Dutch and foreign picture galleries possess pictures painted by him. He was the author of Inleyding tot de hooge Schoole der Schilderkonst, anders de zichtbare werelt (Rotterdam, 1678). He also was the author of a song book and two tragedies. He was a member of the Dordrecht Mennonite congregation until he was banned for marrying outside the brotherhood. He then joined the Reformed Church.

Frans van Hoogstraten, a son of Samuel, was a book dealer in Rotterdam; he too left the Mennonites about 1660 to become a Roman Catholic. Jan and David van Hoogstraten, sons of Frans, who were respectively a book dealer at Gouda and a medical doctor and senior master of a Latin school at Amsterdam, are known as poets.
