Johannes Albertus Hoekstra, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, the son of Sjoerd Hoekstra and Maria Jans Valk, was born 28 June 1763 at Emden. He studied theology at the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Mennonite seminary]] "de Zon" in Amsterdam; in 1784 he was called as pastor to the [[Edam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Edam church]]. Johannes Albertus Hoekstra, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, the son of Sjoerd Hoekstra and Maria Jans Valk, was born 28 June 1763 at Emden. He studied theology at the Mennonite seminary "de Zon" in Amsterdam; in 1784 he was called as pastor to the Edam church. He remained there until January 1786, served a year at Westzaan-Nord, then went to Utrecht, and in 1793 to Altona, Germany, where he remained until his death (7 December 1817). The funeral sermon delivered by J. Goos, and a booklet, Ter nagedachtenis van J. A. S. Hoekstra, by J. Schultz, both appeared in Altona in 1817. He was a member of the directorate of Tot Nut van't Algemeen.
