Hoek, van der, family
Van der Hoek is a Mennonite family living at Broek near Joure, Dutch province of Friesland, many of whose members have served as deacons of the Joure congregation. The ancestor was Homme Jeltes, born at Irnsum, Friesland, in 1575. In 1813 they adopted the family name of van der Hoek. Two members were preachers: Atze Wybes van der Hoek, died 1835, untrained minister serving Edam 1791-1796 and Twisk-Abbekerk 1796-1835, and his cousin Wybe Hommes van der Hoek, born 1790, died 15 August 1875, at Wolvega, appointed ministerial candidate by the church board of Twisk in 1812, serving Aalsmeer as a candidate 1812-1814, as a minister 1814-1815, Grouw "Kleine Huis" 1815-1819, Wieringen 1819-1823, and Kromwal Ytens 1823-1862. In 1831-1838 he also served the Kleinzand congregation of Sneek. In 1849 he addressed the Executive Committee of the Conference in Friesland on behalf of provisions to be made for Mennonites living in towns where there was no congregation.
