Eusebius Hershey was born near Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 14 August 1823. Converted at the age of 18, he joined the United Brethren Church and began to preach for them in 1842. After a few years he joined the Evangelical Mennonites, which later became a part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church. He spent 43 years in evangelistic work mostly among non-Mennonites in the eastern part of the United States and Canada, making 13 trips to Canada.

Hershey felt the call to Africa, and on 1 November 1890, he sailed from New York, arriving at Sierra Leone after 38 days. He preached through an interpreter for six months, then took sick, and after an illness of seven days died on 24 May 1891. He was the pioneer of all foreign missionary work of his own church, and the first foreign missionary of all American Mennonites.
