Herding, a former Mennonite family, apparently immigrants from Flanders, lived particularly at Leiden, Holland, where they supplied 10 deacons to the congregation (first to the Flemish, then to the United congregation). Some of them served for four or even five periods. They were mostly well-to-do cloth merchants. One member of this family, Vincent Herdingh, was a preacher of the Flemish congregation from 1686, and from 1700 of the United congregation at Leiden; he served until his death on 24 August 1731.
