Urban Heberle (1812-66), a Lutheran church historian of Württemberg, Germany. As deacon in Blaubeuren 1843-1849 and archdeacon 1847-1857 in Tübingen, he published important articles relating to Anabaptist history of the 16th century, showing himself an expert in the field. His important works were (1) "Johann Denk und sein Büchlein vom Gesetz Gottes" (Theologische Studien und Kritiken, 1851, 121-94); (2) "Johann Denk und die Ausbreitung seiner Lehre" (op. cit., 1855, 817-90); (3) "Leonhard Kaiser, lutherischer, kein anabaptistischer Blutzeuge" (Zeitschrift für Protestantismus und Kirche, 1856); (4) "W. Capitos Verhältnis zum Anabaptismus" (Niedners Zeitschrift für die historische Theologie, 1857, 285f.); (5) "Die Anfänge des Anabaptismus in der Schweiz" (Jahrbuch für deutsche Theologie, 1858). Especially the last article is of outstanding importance historically. No student of Anabaptist history can afford to overlook it.
