Harlinger Vraagenboek
Harlinger Vraagenboek, thus is usually called the Dutch Mennonite catechism Vraagen over den Godsdienst tot onderwijs der jeugd, Geschikt door de Leeraaren der Christelijke Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Harlingen. It was published at Harlingen in 1751, reprinted at Haarlem and Amsterdam in 1776. This catechism, to which Joannes Stinstra, minister at Harlingen 1733-85, was the prominent contributor, contains in its first edition on 214 pages 931 questions. It is written in a moderate and somewhat rationalistic tone, and influenced by the practical philosophy of English philosophers like Clarke and Tillotson. Christian Sepp in his biography of Stinstra is of the opinion that the Harlinger Vraagenboek depreciates "the dogma of God's mercy in Christ as the source of new life." This catechism was much used in Dutch congregations, often even until 1860.
