Harder is a common Mennonite name of Prussian background. The Danzig church record first lists the name in 1677. It also appeared in the records of the Mennonite churches of Tiegenhagen, Ladekopp, Rosenort, Fürstenwerder, and Heubuden. In 1940 it was the eighth most common Mennonite name in East Germany; at that time there were 184 Mennonites bearing the name. From Prussia the name was transplanted to Russia, the United States, Canada, and South America.

Who's Who Among the Mennonites lists B. W. Harder and H. N. Harder as ministers, and M. S. Harder as a professor at Bethel College.
