Hans van der Straeten (Straten) was an Anabaptist martyr, arrested at Antwerp, and burned at the stake at Brussels, Belgium, on 28 March 1571. He was 31 years of age and had been married only six weeks when he was imprisoned. His wife, Tanneken van den Broucke, b. at Mechelen, 17 years of age, was arrested together with Hans. In prison when she was tried, she recanted and was put in a cloister at Breda, in the Netherlands, but soon managed to escape; then she traveled to Danzig in Prussia, where she joined the Flemish Mennonite Church. Hans belonged to a family that had many "heretics," some of whom joined the Mennonites and died as martyrs; a brother of Hans, Martin van der Straeten, was executed at Ghent in 1572, and their father Josse (Joost) suffered martyrdom for his faith in Antwerp in 1571.
