Johann Hübert was born in Steinthal, [[Russia|Russia]]. After some study in Russia and Holland he was sent out in 1893 by the [[Doopsgezinde Zendingsraad|Dutch Mennonite Mission Association]] to its missionary fields in what then was called the Dutch East Indies; he settled at Kedungpendjalin on the island of [[Java (Indonesia)|Java]], where he was active in teaching and evangelizing without interruption for a period of more than 15 years. He also founded a little hospital at Kedungpendjalin, of which he was the manager until 1938.
