[[Category:Sixteenth Century Anabaptist Martyrs]]

Latest revision as of 18:05, 20 December 2014

Grietgen (Margriete van den Berghe) of Lier in Brabant, Belgium, an Anabaptist martyr, was seized with three fellow believers (Goris Cooman, Naentgen Bornaige, and Wouter van der Weyden) at Ghent, Belgium, in 1551, whither they had all fled from Lier in Brabant. She had been baptized by Gillis den Dooper, presumably Gillis van Aken. Because she steadfastly confessed her faith she was sentenced to death by fire, which she cheerfully endured. The death of these four martyrs is sung in a hymn of 24 stanzas, beginning "Doemen vijftienhondert schreve, daertoe een en vijftich jaer," found in Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, No. 4.
